Depot Protection Upgrade Commences at Heaton Depot

Rothwell Group Ltd is proud to announce the commencement of the Depot Protection System upgrade at Heaton Depot, Newcastle upon Tyne.

As the Principal Contractor for Network Rail, Rothwell Group Ltd has officially begun work on a comprehensive design and build programme to replace the life-expired Depot Protection System with a modern, compliant Zonegreen system. The upgrade spans across train shed roads 1–4 and 5–8, including the underframe cleaning shed.

The project, which started in August 2025, is scheduled to run for 30 weeks, with completion expected by March 2026. The works will be carried out under uninterrupted access arrangements and in close coordination with Network Rail and Northern Rail teams.

Scope of Works Includes:

  • Full site survey and electrical distribution review
  • Electrical and civil design for new power and data cabling
  • Installation of new concrete bases for derailers and signals
  • Strip-out of the existing Depot Protection system
  • Installation and commissioning of Zonegreen equipment including road end panels, beacons, and klaxons
  • Testing and handover of the new Depot Protection System

Key Milestones:

  • Design Sign-Off: August 2025
  • Roads 1–4 Installation & Commissioning: August to December 2025
  • Roads 5–8 Installation & Commissioning: December 2025 to March 2026
  • Final Client Handover: March 2026
